What to do with knocked out teeth:

1. Pick up the knocked out tooth by the crown of the tooth, do not leave it at the accident site. Handle the tooth with care and touch only the crown of the tooth to minimize injury to the root.
2. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse the tooth with water. Do not use soap or chemicals, do not scrub it or dry it. Please do not wrap it in a tissue.
3. Reposition the tooth in the socket immediately if possible. The sooner the tooth is replaced, the greater the likelihood it will survive. Carefully push the tooth into the socket with your fingers. If the tooth cannot be replaced in the socket, then place it inside the cheek in the mouth. If all else fails, place the tooth in milk.
4. Contact us as soon as possible

Cracked teeth show a variety of symptoms including erratic pain when chewing or pain when exposed to extreme temperatures. Pain may come and go but it is strongly advisable to let us check your tooth before the crack gets worse and you may lose your tooth altogether. Cracked teeth can be treated in a variety of ways:

• by removing the crack and placing a filling,
• by doing a Root Canal Treatment or
• by placing a protective crown.

If the crack extends deep into the root of the tooth, the tooth may need be removed and the missing tooth replaced. Remember that the longer a crack is left untreated, the worse it gets.

You can help to prevent your teeth from cracking by not chewing on objects such as ice, un-popped popcorn kernels or pens. Don’t clench your teeth, if you clench or grind your teeth while you are asleep, please talk to us about getting you a retainer or mouth guard to protect your teeth. Please also wear a sports /gum guard or protective mask while playing contact sports.

Abscessed tooth symptoms and treatment:

When the pulp in the tooth becomes inflamed of infected and goes untreated, a toothache will develop. The toothache can present itself with pain on chewing or biting, sensitivity to hot and cold, swelling of the gums or other symptoms. A dental abscess is usually treated with a Root Canal Treatment.

Floss your teeth well at least once a day , brush both teeth and gums twice a day after meals. Change your toothbrush every 3 months or more often if the bristles are worn. Try to use a toothbrush with soft bristles so that you do not brush too hard. If your gums bleed when brushing, do not stop brushing but rather keep brushing and your gums will become stronger. If gums keep bleeding after a few days, please make an appointment to see us.

It is recommended to have a dental check up every 6 months and to have a scale and polish at least once a year.

Gums are the soft tissue that surrounds the bottom part of the tooth root. Plaque causes acids and toxins to build up around the teeth and gums, the gums then become red and inflamed and may often bleed, this is known as ‘gingivitis’. Once infected with toxins and germs, gums develop pockets and become loose around the tooth, this is then the start of ‘Periodontal disease’ which is the precursor of bone loss around the teeth.

Good oral hygiene, flossing and brushing both teeth and gums twice a day after meals is vital in promoting over all health. Brush your gums as well as your teeth. Strong gums are important in preserving both teeth and gums. disease and tooth loss!
